The poem A Roll of the Dice Will Never Abolish Chance by French symbolist Stéphane Mallarmé characterizes by his purposeful use of blank space and careful placement of words on the page, allowing multiple non-linear readings of the text.
Triana’s musical composition is one possible reading of the text. Comprised of seven movements, it derives its macro and micro-structural construction from the poetry. Honoring the importance given to the poem’s visual aspect by Mallarmé, music is accompanied by a stage setting. Instruments are laid out on stage around a light circle and vocalists hang from the ceiling as an art mobile, descending to the floor as the work evolves.
